The ROME Approach was originally developed to serve a client who is using OKRs and Agile (specifically Scrum and Kanban). Their middle managers were unclear concerning their roles in both OKRs and Agile. They needed a way to interface with us that was effective but familiar. Additionally, the client was in the process of using AI to automate their work. Thus, we needed a way to document the work that would be automated and the middle management’s role before and after automation. We let the client know that our methods would provide everything that they needed, but they were skeptical. We also needed a way to prove to all levels of the organization that our techniques would work for them. We needed a method to gather evidence that they would not only understand but also accept as proof. We decided to create a protocol that was relatable and easy to learn. Additionally, the method would explain the middle management role, enable staff training, and provide a method of documenting the processes that needed to be documented both before and after automation. This led to the birth of the ROME approach.
ChangeU starts with understanding your goals and ensuring that they are SMART and unambiguous. Then we need to ornament, or detail, your goals. We work with you to develop metrics to measure goal achievement, and leading indicators to predict whether or not you are on track to reach your goals. We believe that when goals are not being met, one or more of the assumptions that you are using to reach your goals are incorrect. Thus, you need to manage your goals by challenging the assumptions and testing them. If hypothesis testing fails, then we work with you to establish more accurate assumptions that are more useful to achieving your goals. We work with you to experiment/test out your new action plan and repeat this cycle until you are satisfied with goal progress and achievement. This method works for all goals…professional or personal.
Most importantly, we detail the ROME Approach so that you can learn it. We hope that you continue to use it for its continued effectiveness as you seek to accomplish bigger and bigger goals. We hope that you will spread it to your organization and make it a habit whenever you want to accomplish a goal or change something within yourself, your organization, or both.
Hence some of the details of ROME are listed below. I hope that you will incorporate them into your daily life. The more you practice anything, the better you become at it. We created ROME with this fact in mind; we hope that you will use it repeatedly in your life, that your organization will adopt ROME at all levels, and that you build the expertise in ROME that leads to extreme effectiveness in goal accomplishment and productivity.
The “O” in the ROME Approach stands for “Ornament” the goal. Ornament means “to heighten the attractiveness of by adding decorative or fanciful details “ according to Websters. The details of a goal provide vital clarity into 1) the true meaning of the goal and 2) the strategic thought process of the client.
The “E” in ROME is for Experiment with Goals. Experimentation is the process of trying out new ideas or methods. We test out the experiment with the least amount of time and resources possible. Experimentation demands that we analyze the results to determine if he experiment worked and warrants changing plans or if we need to try another experiment.
